A message from John Walerych
As we bid Adieu to the Olympics in Paris the Summer League results are now being entered by the various competing clubs, and we await the results of a competitive race season.
As for today (11th August), in Battersea there was no sign of rain and as usual the sun shone on our Summer League. Whether it was the hottest day of the year is uncertain, but I am sure all the runners knew it was warm.
Due to junior parkrun summer league commenced at 10 am.
Despite the summer holidays Queens Park Harriers turnout was a respectable 42 seniors and 12 tenderfoot runners.
The competition has been fiercer than ever and in the senior’s race there were over 300 runners of all ages and abilities.
The highlights as usual were the relay races. It appears that the local track season has been suspended for the Olympics, so ESM fielded a young and very fast relay team and despite our best efforts their future track stars raced to a convincing win in the men's relays.
The mixed relays showed the fierceness of the competition with Philip Voke and an Ealing Eagle diving for the line only to discover that it was the start of the handover zone and so a few metres short of the finish.
Once they had disentangled themselves and retrieved their batons the brief sprint for the line continued, unfortunately not in favour of Philip.
Thankfully no recordings of this incident exist.
