Meet the members: Gildas Braine

How long have you been a member of Queen’s Park Harriers?

Since the summer of 2013.  I used to do a lot of fencing at a reasonable level, and after I stopped competing in 2010, I lost my fitness and put on a lot of weight. Joining the club was the best thing I could have done!

What's the best thing about running?

Apart from the obvious benefits to my mental and physical health as well as meeting lots of brilliant people, it's been a great way to get to know London better!

What's your favourite running event?

parkrun is brilliant. It brings people together and makes running accessible to a lot of people that otherwise would probably have never really gotten into it. I take it for granted now, but it made a massive difference when I was starting out.

In terms of an individual event, it has to be the London Marathon. The support is unreal, and it's such a massive part of the sporting calendar in the capital, so to have been able to take part alongside (well, a few hundred yards behind!) the likes of Mo or Paula is incredible.

What else do you do?

I'm a dad of two little girls and I work as a kitchen designer. I also do a bit of running coaching too.

Tell us something surprising about yourself that other members may not know.

Back in the 90s I spent a year working as a firefighter in the Paris fire brigade as part of my national service. Ten years later, my wife Jojo worked as a Special Constable in the City of London Police, so between us we've got the emergency services covered!
